Jamie Schweser has submitted an article about his experience trying to help a friend caught in the madness of the New Orleans juvenile justice system.

Danny Hoch's film production of Jails, Hospitals and Hip-hop is going to be shown for possibly the last time anywhere tomorrow night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. I love this movie and the theatre, so I can't really reccomend this event more highly if you're in the area.

update:
On the Rawkus message boards someone asked Rawkus about the Danny Hoch situation, and the board moderator refuted the claim that Rawkus leaving the deal had anything to do with the content of the movie or Rawkus's Fox lineage. The administrator then quickly closed the thread so no further discussion could be had on the topic.
Last night when someone asked Danny "What can we do to help you?" He answered "Write to Rawkus, let them know what you thought of the movie and ask why they pulled the plug on it." So do that!.

The prison radio project has a new show available: "Race, Class and the U.S. Death Penalty."

And here is some news about the struggle for a fair mayoral election in Selma:

Subject: Selma Campaign: Firebomb and Update

Greetings all!

I've just received word that a truck being used by the
"Joe's Gotta Go" campaign to unseat long time Selma Mayor
Joe Smitherman has been firebombed today.

For those who don't know, there is a fierce campaign to
unseat Smitherman who has held the mayorship for 37 years.
Read below for more on Smitherman and his infamous reign as
mayor (yes, he was the same man who presided over "Bloody
Sunday" -- the melee that resulted in nearly 100 people
injured in the march over the Pettus Bridge from Selma to
Montgomery).

Below is some important information on the campaign as well
as urls to articles (including an 8/25 op-ed piece by me) on
all of this. Please take the time, if you can, to spread
the word about what's going on in Selma. The more light we
shine on this madness, the harder it will be for them to get
away with it.

in gratitude and solidarity,

Makani N. Themba-Nixon

Subject: SELMA, PLEASE FORWARD

This message originated with the Rev. Susan L. Starr, a
Unitarian Universalist minister involved in the current
effort to unseat Mayor Joe Smitherman in Selma, Alabama on
September 12th. On that date, Smitherman, who has been in
office for 37 years and who presided over the infamous
"Bloody Sunday" police action at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in
1965, faces challenger James Perkins Jr., a Selma native who
aspires to be the town's first African American mayor. In a
vote on August 22nd, serious irregularities were witnessed
in the voting process, including African Americans being
denied their right to cast a ballot, and questions arose
about the validity of more than 1,500 absentee ballots
(approximately 1,000 of which were marked for the
incumbent). Below is a website article from ColorLines
magazine you may wish to access for information on the
history of voting in Selma, the August 22 vote, and the
upcoming runoff election. Also included is a URL for the
Selma Times Journal (search for Smitherman for election
articles).

As always, thanks for the time it takes to read the site.
