No More Prisons

Makani Themba-Nixon has written a piece called How Race is Lived in the Media: The New York Times Misses the Mark that's well worth the read.

www.mumia2000.org has a great calendar of activist events for the summer and beyond. I'm posting it not only because it's a great activist resource but also because I've been getting a lot of mail asking about the political conventions, and that information is available there as well.

Yo wasssap!  Your website is dope and it's about time that people started to do something 'bout all this corrupt government corporate power crap.  But basically i'm writing to inform you all about an amazing event that will be taking place in L.A. from August 13-17.  It's called the Shadow Conventions and it's an attempt to address issues that major political parties haven't addressed: campaign finance reform, poverty and the growing wealth gap, and the failed war on drugs.  It's a non-profit, grassroots, guerrilla sort of effort to get at the root of problems.  I've been put in charge of organizing the youth part of the program and i need as much help as possible.  Ideas, suggesstions, comments would all be helpful.  I'm hoping to organize and gather as many of the youth as possible.  The more the merrier and the more voices heard.  So spread the news and don't sleep y'all!!!!!! Up in the upper right corner, you'll see the "New York Times" section featuring Billy's response and a message board where people can talk back about it.

Inside Media has a story about other media's reaction to the New York Times series on race. They bring up a lot of the major issues in a pretty unbiased way, and they mention this site.

Billy writes that a lot of his friends wish he would have made more changes - and I'm one of them, but on the other hand a proper response to that article would've taken a third, fourth and fifth book and of course there's no time for that. But hopefully we can have some of the conversations that he had to leave out of his piece in the message board.
